(Washington, D.C.) - Today, House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Brian Babin released the following statement regarding the tragic flooding in Kerr County, TX.

“As a parent and grandfather to children who often attend this camp, this hits close to home. I’m heartbroken for the families impacted and the Kerr County community, and my thoughts and prayers remain with the first responders and volunteers aiding in the search and rescue efforts.

As we continue to learn new details on this devastating event, staffing levels or funding cuts did not cause this tragedy. We know the National Weather Service had five forecasters on duty at the local office—well above normal staffing—and issued warnings well ahead of the storm. Forecasting continues to improve, but in the face of such loss, we must ask what more can be done. The Science, Space, and Technology Committee fully intends to review this event and explore how legislation, like the Weather Act reauthorization, can strengthen communication systems and better harness innovative technologies to save lives. While we had to postpone a hearing titled ‘Protecting Lives and Property: Harnessing Innovative Technologies to Enhance Weather Forecasting’ due to the House recess, we plan to reschedule it soon. That hearing will provide an important opportunity to examine this event, and the improvements needed moving forward.”
